If you share information about your household address with us, we can use this to determine your fresh and waste water suppliers. We then use information about your household’s energy consumption to estimate whether your water usage is likely to be low, medium or high. We then use this information in combination with publicly available tariff data for your provider to forecast what you will pay over the next 12 months.

We can retrieve information from our data partners about most households’ annual energy consumption and use this to estimate water usage. But if we don’t have this information, then we use a national average water consumption instead.

How our calculation works

We calculate your expected spend based on your provider’s standing charge and a proportion of your estimated annual water consumption, multiplied by your provider’s usage rate.

We sum these over the year and compare it to how much you would have spent last year if your usage remains constant.

Assumptions we make

Your annual water consumption is closely correlated to your annual gas consumption.
Your household is on a metered payment plan.
Your household pays the standard tariff from your supplier.
Your water tariff will not change year-on-year unless your provider has announced this change.

Limitations of our calculations

Our data implies a strong correlation between a household's annual gas consumption and their water usage. However, there are exceptions to this and so some households will be categorised as using either more or less water than they do in reality.

Customers in Scotland will not receive water forecasts. This is because in Scotland customers are able to switch between suppliers and so we are unable to identify a supplier based on postcode alone.
