It’s important to make sure you know what you are signing. But some providers seem to try to obscure rather than reveal the truth!

Getting smart about contracts

It can be easy to overlook some of the key parts of a contract when signing up to a new mobile phone, broadband or media agreement. Here are some of the key parts to look for.

Monthly cost

Is there a single price for the full contract length, or an introductory price that goes up after a length of time? Look out for the X% increases over inflation and when they will be and the introductory discounts that also disappear at the end of the contract period.

Increases to your prices

Mid-contract price rises, such as those linked to inflation must be made clear to you upfront, but can be hidden in small print. If your provider puts up prices more than what you agreed to, you will be allowed to leave penalty free. They must also give you 30 days notice of any changes.

Minimum contract period

Broadband and Mobile providers must notify you when your contract is over, but with busy lives it is often forgotten about, so keep a note of your contract end dates to avoid overpaying.

Cancellation process

Your right to cancel and what the procedure is for cancellation. You can leave contracts early, but will normally incur an early repayment charge but this shouldn’t be more than the remaining contract amount.
